A little about stickiness
Knit strength is critical to the final dimensions of your knitting project and is usually expressed per 10 x 10 cm. It is often given as the number of stitches across the width multiplied by the number of rows across the height, for example: 19 stitches x 26 rows in stockinette stitch = 10 x 10 cm.
The stickiness varies greatly from person to person; some knit loosely while others knit tightly. To adjust your knitting strength, you can adjust the size of the needles. It is important that you adjust this so that your gauge matches that of the pattern as the stitches given in the pattern are only a guideline. If you use a different gauge than the one listed, the yarn consumption and measurements of your project will differ from the pattern.
If you wish to knit in a different yarn than what is stated in the pattern, there is no problem if you achieve the same knitting strength.
Exchange one yarn for another
When changing to a different yarn, it is important to maintain the knitting strength. By achieving the same stitch strength as specified in the pattern, you ensure that your project reaches the desired dimensions. Maintaining the same knit strength is usually easier when you choose a yarn with roughly the same run length. Additionally, you can use several strands of a thinner yarn to match the knit strength of a thicker yarn.
It is always recommended to knit a test patch to ensure that you reach the correct knit strength. Note that different yarns have different structures and properties, which gives the garment different expressions. Be aware of this when choosing your yarn for your project.
